I am directed by the Earl of Crewe to ack.

the receipt of your letter No. 14890 of the

ult.

30th luti, stating that the L.G. of the Treas.

are not prepared to give any undertaking as

to the amount to be contributed to H. Long

in respect of the loss due to the Opium policy

of H.M.'s Govt. until they have before

them details of the revenue and expenditure

of the Colony for next year, together with

revised figures for the current and the

preceding year.

The 0. A.G. of the Colony has repeatedly

telegraphed asking what amount he may insert

in the Estimates for next year, on account of

the loss of p:opium revenue, and the refusal

of T.Ls. to agree to any SUB, or to any

principle of computing it, has caused great

uncertainty and embarrassment. In the
